Summer Season Board: Leopard Frog

We have a creek in our backyard and come across Leopard frogs (Lithobates pipiens) every so often in the summer. We also get to see them at the local parks and the girls are always very excited to come across one.

I think the most fun thing about this activity was making "frog skin" to bring their creations to life. My idea was to mix flour and food coloring so everything can dry out before adding it to glue. When mixed, the flour should clump up to make little bumps like on real frogs and some of the dye should come off to dye the glue. Once dry, the texture should be smooth from the glue, but bumpy from the flour. The clearness of the glue should also let the underlying crayon color come through. And it worked!

I ended up using 1 tsp of flour and 5 drops of food coloring. Once dry, I mixed an equal part of flour and glue together. It can be a little tricky to apply, but we just used a toothpick to spread it around.

Here’s our coloring page!

I had a lot of fun drawing this one.

And here they are on the season board!
