Summer Season Board: Turkey Vulture

We've had a lot of Turkey Vultures flying overhead this year and they are very easily identified due to their size and wing pattern. Beyond the red head and black body, they have gray that runs along the wing. The only other vulture in the area is the lesser seen Black Vulture and it only has gray on the tip of the wing.

We dyed feathers black using the same procedure as the cardinal feathers.

I always like to come up with fun facts to tell my girls while they work and constantly have to remind myself that toddlers know *nothing*, so even the basic fact that "Vultures don't have feathers on their heads" is very interesting to them.

Fun facts about Turkey Vultures:

  1. Scientific name: Cathartes aura

  2. They help keep the world clean by eating carrion.

  3. They do not have feathers on their heads, which helps keep them clean.

  4. Turkey vultures can have a wingspan of 63–72 in (160–183 cm)!
