Spring Season Board: Sulphur Butterfly

We’ve started to see our first butterflies! In our yard we mainly see white and yellow ones right now. I haven’t gotten a good look at the yellow ones to know which Sulphur butterfly they are, but I figure that a toddler knowing that a yellow butterfly in our area is some kind of Sulphur butterfly is still a good start!

Coloring page!

I’ve gotten a little tired of trying to find realistic coloring pages for toddlers, so I’ve decided to start drawing them myself! I’m not the best artist, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned teaching kids, it’s that you don’t have to be perfect. The file includes a version with and without text.

Good ol’ tissue paper will be the yellow and texture of the wings. For something a little different, I decided that we could color the body of the butterfly and then use paint for the “glue” on the wings. It worked out really well since the paint provided some extra color. I also liked how the black lines still came through since that means this technique should still work on butterflies like Monarchs.

We haven’t really talked about butterflies before, so our fun facts revolved around how caterpillars turn into butterflies. And that they drink nectar like bees. All super exciting things for toddlers.
