Spring Season Board: Ants

Ants! When you start paying attention to the little guys, there are actually a ton of different kinds. Last summer, I found 13 different species in my yard alone! From helping clean up the world to improving soil quality, they are super important for the environment. I couldn’t think of anything super creative for the craft, but thought it could be a fun time to introduce pipe cleaners and how insects use antennae.

The ants on the coloring page are to scale and match carpenter ants.

Generally speaking, carpenter ants in our area can be black, black & dark red, or brown. They are the biggest ants you see running around.

Ant fun facts:

  1. Scientific name: Camponotus sp. (at least that’s the species in the coloring page)

  2. Like bees, all the worker ants are female.

  3. It’s estimated that over the course of a year, ants can move 50 tons of soil per square mile.

  4. Some ants can carry things up to 50x their own body weight.

  5. There are over 12 000 species of ants in the world.

After coloring and gluing the “antennae”, we added their crafts to the board. Only one more to go!
