Spring Season Board: Violet
Violets are an important early spring flower native to eastern North America. My backyard is covered in them, which makes it a great flower for us to learn about next. Similar to the dandelion craft, my goal was to make something that highlights the details of the flower. Since a violet only has five petals, I decided to cut them out of purple construction paper. I cut them to fit this coloring page and left a little tab to bend over and glue - this will let the petals pop up. I cut out 10 petals per coloring page since one of the flowers is a side view.
Like normal, while the girls colored I told them some fun facts which were very similar to dandelion since violets are also edible. Here are some you can pick from:
Scientific name: Viola sororia
The flowers are edible.
The leaves are edible.
They are important host plants for Fritillary butterflies.
Violets provide food for many herbivores, including: wild turkeys, rabbits, and deer.
Once they were done coloring, we used the tabs to glue the petals on top of the petals of the coloring page. Now to add them to the board and look for violets in the yard!
