Spring Season Board: Honey Bee

Honey bees are such an important insect. From pollinating many crop plants to making delicious honey, they are a huge benefit for humanity and the natural world. We also happen to have a couple hives of our own, so they were the obvious pick as our first insect. Feel free to use the following images to help teach your little ones about a bee hive!

The idea behind the craft was simple: color some hexagon “honey combs”, add puffy paint for “honey”, and then add some bee stickers!

Here are some more fun bee facts!

  1. Scientific name: Apis mellifera

  2. All Honey bee workers are female.

  3. They get pollen and nectar from flowers: pollen is for feeding baby bees and nectar is for making honey.

  4. Bees can sting, but only if you make them mad.

  5. Honey can change flavor based on what flowers are used.

According to the instructions, puffy paint takes a while to dry. So to speed dry it, I tossed the papers into my dehydrator for a few minutes. You can probably get a similar effect with a blow dryer, or just plan for the craft to take multiple sessions. After we added the bee stickers, we but our “beehive” near the flowers, of course!
